Today, knowledge is everywhere. A quick search can bring up thousands of piano tutorials, articles, and videos. Free resources can be valuable, but they also present a challenge: too much information without direction. For many learners, this creates more confusion than clarity.

It is common for beginners to try learning on their own, following online videos or copying what they see. At first, it might seem like progress is being made. But without proper foundations, this kind of self-learning is fragile. Students often build skills on imitation rather than understanding, which can limit their growth in the long run.

In my teaching experience, I have seen two recurring patterns. The first is learners who manage to play a little by copying. They may manage a few pieces, but their potential is held back. I often wonder what they could achieve if their learning was guided by proper knowledge. The second group is those who start with poor foundations: incorrect fingering, misunderstanding rhythm, or using uncomfortable hand positions. These habits are not only discouraging but also difficult to unlearn later. In both cases, the missing link is clear: they would have benefited from a qualified teacher.

A teacher does much more than pass on knowledge. A good teacher listens, understands each student’s unique needs, and creates a path that supports steady progress. They provide feedback that no video can give: how to correct posture, where tension is building in the hands, and how to phrase a piece with expression. Teachers filter out what is unnecessary, highlight what is most important, and set achievable goals.

Every student’s journey is different. Some need confidence, others need discipline, and some require new strategies to overcome specific challenges. A teacher adapts to these needs, ensuring that each student finds their way forward. This individualised approach is what keeps learning meaningful and sustainable.

In today’s world, where information is everywhere, the teacher’s role is more important than ever. The right teacher provides clarity in a noisy environment, care in moments of difficulty, and the structure needed for true progress.

Real learning is not about collecting tips and tricks. It is about building strong foundations and moving step by step towards your own potential. With a teacher by your side, the journey is not only clearer but also far more rewarding.
